How We Decorate Our Cozy Nashville Apartment
Decorating day is always a super special day for Steven and me. I literally plan out the whole day a week in advance so that I can get everything we need without stress. The goal of decorating day is to not have to leave the house for ANYTHING and stay in our Christmas PJ's/watch Christmas movies all day long. It might be the most exciting day of the year for me. I think maybe even over Christmas... well, maybe. Decorating for Christmas becomes a chore for a lot of people, and it makes me so sad! However, with my tips, it is practically impossible to not have the best day of decorating ever, and forever!
1. Plan in advance
Make a list of everything you will need on your decorating day of choice. I usually break it down into categories: Food, drinks, decorations, and technical. This year, I made a veggie quiche for breakfast, we snacked on Trader Joe's holiday cookies and Williams Sonoma Peppermint Bark (THE BEST!), and we drank Willams Sonoma Hot Chocolate (ALSO THE BEST!). I did not want to have to worry about kitchen cleanup throughout the day, so we decided to order CPK takeout for dinner. (We have learned that Postmates is our best friend on decorating day.) We decorated on a Friday, so I had all of my ingredients and snacks purchased on Wednesday to avoid any last-minute rushes to the store. After the food was situated, I ventured out to Michael's and purchased new garland for around the apartment because they were having amazing deals. Finally, I made sure we had everything we would need to repair/turn on any pre-existing decorations, like batteries, tacks, or hot glue. Things can break and batteries can go bad after being stored for so long, so it is important to be prepared in these situations!
2. Set up your tree first, but save tree decorating for LAST
I like to put up our tree first because it sets the mood for the rest of the decor. However, we like to wait until it gets dark outside and the rest of the house is complete before hanging our ornaments. Decorating the tree is the most special Christmas tradition for me because we get to think about all of our favorite memories when we hang each ornament. Also, setting up the tree can be a pain in the butt, so I like to get it out of the way first so we don't have to worry about it anymore - it's an added bonus! When it comes time to decorate the tree, make it special! Have all of your bins and mess put away, turn on your favorite Christmas movie, light a candle, make hot chocolate, and get to work. (We watched The Santa Claus!)
3. Decorate room-by-room
I like to focus on one room at a time, in order to not overwhelm myself. We decorate each room in the apartment, even the bathroom, so it takes all day! I like to focus on the main room first and work my way back, ending with the guest bedroom. Doing it this way allows me to focus on each space on its own, and I work a lot quicker. Also, if you pull out a decoration that doesn't belong in the room you're working on, put it in the room where it will go. It's a lot easier than bringing bins around everywhere!
4. Clean as you go
There is nothing worse than letting all of your empty bins and wrappers pile up. As soon as you are done with a bin, pack it up and get it out of there! Same goes for bubble wrap, tape, ect. Just eliminate the mess. It will make the room feel less heavy, and you won't feel an ounce of stress about it. This is what Steven is for, ladies. He handles the not-so-fun activities. :)
5. Just have fun
Remember what Christmas is all about. If something isn't going exactly how you want it to, just laugh it off. This is the time of year to keep that smile on your face! Let out your inner child and just feel excited! It's the freaking holidays! Cue the spiked nog and let loose.
I hope you have the best decorating day ever, if you haven't already started, of course! If you have any other tips, please let me know in the comments! I will link a few other pictures of our decorations below, and if you have time, I share a special bonus story down there, as well! Love you all!
My Favorite Decoration
When I think of Christmas, the first thought that comes to mind is lasagna at my Mom-Mom's. There is nothing I wouldn't give to have her back with us, laughing and brightening up our holiday. When I was cleaning out her home, I found this Christmas Southern Living book from the year I was born. Inside, it has her name and address printed, and I just immediately felt connected to this book. It is my absolute favorite holiday decoration to display because I instantly think of her every time I look at it. It feels like I have a little piece of her here with me in Nashville, cheering up my home, and if you knew her, that is exactly what she always did. She made everyone smile.
